There's a special kind of crazy in New York that's reserved for those people who fly through Midtown traffic on bicycles to deliver packages. While the number of bike messengers has fallen over the past decade, there's still enough of them to make you wonder if it's worth risking life-ending injury for barely minimum wage.
This video is from a bike messenger race six years ago. Riders raced down the length of Manhattan, back up and then across to Queens. Let's be clear: By no means was this a sanctioned competiton. And most of the time, bike messengers don't go flying past pedestrians in crosswalks like they do here -- although snagging cars and whipping through the gaps between the lanes is normal operating procedure.
